Halloween and Trick-or-Treating are coming up soon! Here are some social thinking “tricks” for your child:
Your children are going to get candy they do like, and candy they don’t like. Talk with them about saying, “Thank you and Happy Halloween” with a smile no matter what. Explain: the candy-giver bought the candy thinking that you would like it. You will make the candy-giver feel good, and then they will have good thoughts about you.
Talk with your child about saying nice things (compliments) to other children about their costumes. When you tell someone, “I like your costume,” it makes that person feel good, and then they will have good thoughts about you. People want to be with people who make them feel good. Ask your children how they would feel if someone compliments their costume (or said that they didn’t like their costume).
